Westmeath’s first ever All-Star Rory O’Connell is auctioning the jersey (signed by the 2001 All-Star team) on ebay from August 18-28 to raise money for South Westmeath Hospice. All-Star jerseys are a rare commodity especially in these parts so there is sure to be huge interest in the former midfielder’s shirt.

In preparation for the fulfillment of an ambition that will require “dodging tankers”, an Athlone man hopes that, on August 18, he will become the first man ever to swim the entire length of Lough Ree.

People are asked to collect €2 for each cup of fresh ground coffee consumed.

This year’s Army Open Day at Custume Barracks takes place on Sunday September 11, and will raise funds for the South Westmeath Hospice and the Army Benevolent Fund.

Internet sensation Crystal Swing, along with local favourites TR Dallas and Mick Flavin, will be just a few of the acts generously giving of their time in a benefit concert at the Glasson Golf and Country Club on Tuesday August 30, in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.

The annual South Westmeath Hospice 5km Fun Run/Walk saw over 320 people participate in a race at AIT last Sunday. In its third year, the event continues to be a successful fundraising event for the hospice in Athlone.

Nearly €4,000 raised by AIT staff has been presented to three charities in the Midlands and North-west.
